Children's Literature
"A person's a person, no matter how small."-Dr. Seuss, Horton Hears a Who!
Literature instills a sense of wonder and discovery in us that as young children we feel we must explore. Quality literature that is timeless and utilizes beautiful words, emotion, and finds a way to relate to the reader is valuable to everyone but especially teachers in the classroom. Literature enhances each lesson, but also helps build character in their students. Reading in the classroom is important not only for assessment but also because the students are given a positive outlet. Students can relate to characters and situations in books which can help them realize they are
not alone. Illustrations are a wonderful gateway to art appreciation for children
and sometimes help bring stories into perspective for them. I will use quality
literature in my classroom daily and create lifelong readers in my students.

Literature is an essential in the classroom, but also a necessity for child development. I believe using quality literature will enhance the learning experience, but it will ultimately create lifelong readers. I find that literature can help students acknowledge their own life experiences, and perhaps relate to characters or situations. In my philosophy I explain that creating lessons that involve quality literature will instill a love of reading.

Quality literature in the classroom is a necessity for growing minds to absorb because it is a form of creativity they can later use as a healthy outlet. Bringing forth creative texts and illustrations for the students to explore will help create lifelong readers and excited students in the classroom. This is a small collection of books that I would love to introduce to my students in the classroom because they represent all elements of quality literature and exhibit all genres of literature. I believe this collection is multicultural, thrilling, and beautiful in ways with words and images. A book can truly help someone in life with ways of relatable situations or characters. It is essential to provide the best learning experience to our students, with these books that is possible.

My reading inventory consists of Q&A from children I worked with in my service learning with Hartford Elementary School. This is a great artifact because it shows the joy these children exhibit when reading. Each child is different and loves their own genre or theme in books. By far, this was one of my favorite moments in my service learning because interviewing them was so much fun!

This is an outline of my first lesson plan I exercised for my fourth graders in their resource class. We had a terrific time but it was an amazing teaching moment for me as well. The students were truly engaged and learned more on the importance of multicultural literature.

My second lesson was a major success with my sixth grade resource class! This was more of a creative writing mindset whereas the first lesson was more art based. It was amazing to hear these students come up with "spells" or poems in less than 20 minutes.
